Nobody 2 Review:
Nobody 2, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2021 action-thriller, finally hit the theaters this past weekend. This movie is still unique in the sense that Bob Odenkirk doesn't look like an action hero physically; he looks like an average guy with a family, but it is exciting and thrilling watching him take out numerous bad guys who think he is just an average joe.
The movie picks up with Hutch Mansell (Odenkirk), a family man living in the suburbs who has a tendency for brutal violence, as he continues to juggle his family life along with his risky "side hustle." This time, a long-awaited family trip to a tourist spot takes an unexpected turn, pulling him, his wife Becca (Connie Nielsen), and even his father David (Christopher Lloyd) into a violent new conflict. The plot is straightforward: a simple encounter at a nearby arcade quickly turns into an all-out fight against a fierce, unstable crime boss, played with wild enthusiasm by Sharon Stone.
One of the main strengths of the sequel is how it embraces the absurd. The action sequences are more exaggerated compared to the first movie, stretching the limits of reality while remaining super fun to watch. Tjahjanto, who is recognized for his work in movies like The Night Comes for Us, adds a lively and almost dance-like feel to the fight sequences. The showdown of the movie in an amusement park serves as an excellent example of creative chaos, using all sorts of elements like a funhouse mirror maze and a ball pit as settings to create exciting destruction.
The cast is outstanding. Odenkirk remains a captivating and convincing main lead, effectively expressing Hutch's weary frustration at having to spoil his getaway by confronting a gang of thugs. His acting holds the film's emotional depth, as we sense his letdown at not being able to enjoy a simple day with his loved ones. A refreshing shift from the previous movie, Connie Nielsen has a much bigger, more involved part. Her role as Becca is not just that of a bystander anymore. She gets drawn into Hutch's dangerous life, and Nielsen showcases her own skills in action, proving she's just as tough as Hutch when necessary. Christopher Lloyd is also back, and his character, David Mansell, enjoys even more standout moments. He evolves from being just the charming grandpa with a gun to playing a vital role in the movie's action, becoming a crucial figure in the intense conclusion.
That being said, Nobody 2 does have some shortcomings. The plot, although adequate, mainly repeats the idea of the first movie but in a different setting. Sharon Stone’s character as the villain is entertaining, but her character is not well-developed. She excels in commanding attention, yet she lacks the intimidating presence of the villain from the first movie.
Overall, Nobody 2 is an action-packed sequel that is filled with bloodshed, excitement, and fast-paced action that is fully aware of its purpose. It doesn't try to reinvent the wheel; it simply repeats the idea of the first movie with a faster pace and more explosions. This is an ideal summer movie with a blend of silly fun that will have you cringing at the brutality and laughing at the ridiculousness.
