Shelter Review:
Jason Statham's latest movie, Shelter, hit the theaters last weekend. If you want to see Jason Statham hit people with random household objects, you won't be disappointed. The film is directed by Ric Roman Waugh (Greenland 2: Migration, Angel Has Fallen), who knows how to film brutal action fight sequences and tries to deliver a good storyline to back up the explosive action fans crave in Statham's movies.
Statham plays Michael Mason, a retired elite assassin who used to work for MI6. Now, he just wants to be left alone. He lives in an old, abandoned lighthouse on a rocky island in Scotland. The only person he talks to is a local girl named Jessie (newcomer Bodhi Rae Breathnach), who brings his weekly supplies of rations.
When a massive storm capsizes Jessie's boat and kills her uncle, Mason is forced out of his hiding to save her. He travels to the mainland to get medical help, but this is a mistake. His former handler, Manafort (Bill Nighy), finds out he is still alive and tries to take him out to tie up the loose ends. What happens next is the relentless cross-country chase to hunt down Mason and Jessie.
The movie captures the stunning backdrop of the Scottish coastline where Mason lived in isolation at the lighthouse. Even though the lighthouse keeps him safe, he is there by choice because he can't go back to his old life. One of the standout moments in the film is when a team of highly trained soldiers attacks the lighthouse. Mason cleverly uses the building itself as a weapon to defend himself. It's a creative fight where he already set up booby traps against the anticipated strike team, who outnumbered him.
The friendship between Jason Statham and the young actress Bodhi Rae Breathnach is the best part of the movie. Statham shows a softer side that he doesn't usually show in films. Jessie isn't just a "helpless girl" who needs saving; she is a strong character, and her friendship with Statham's quiet, grumpy character feels real. This relationship gives the movie the heart it needs to feel like a serious story. The tone is well balanced, as Statham provides the action, while Breathnach provides the emotion.
In a time when most movies rely heavily on CGI, the action in Shelter feels real and intense. There is a car chase sequence through the muddy hills that feels messy and wild. The cars are actually hitting the ground, and it feels dangerous and raw. Also, there is a fight sequence in a nightclub where bright neon lights make the creative and violent combat moves look even cooler and clever, like an art form.
Naomi Ackie is a great actress, but this role is too limited for her. She doesn't get to do much in this movie; her character is mostly spent behind the screen. It feels like her character is a waste of her great talent because the script doesn't give her anything important or interesting to do that makes a big impact on the storyline.
The middle of the movie is slow at times as the two characters travel from Scotland to London. The director probably wanted this time for character development, but it drags on a bit. This can feel boring for some viewers as the pacing slowly builds up to the next big action sequence.
Shelter is exactly what you expect from a Jason Statham film. It is a high-end version of a Statham action film that is well-made and mixes mindless violence with a strong emotional core at its center. Shelter is a classic Statham movie from start to finish. If you are looking for a great escape, this is a great choice for fans to watch over the weekend.
