The Pickup

The Pickup Review:

The Pickup, a new action-comedy from director Tim Story featuring Eddie Murphy and Pete Davidson, is now available on Prime Video with an exciting pairing of two generations of comedy. However, it soon turns out to be as ordinary as its name suggests. Although the movie features an impressive lead cast and supporting cast, it fails to deliver the thrilling excitement and humor it strives for, leading to a forgettable movie experience.

The story centers on Russell (Eddie Murphy), a veteran armored truck driver, and his quirky young partner, Travis (Pete Davidson). In what seems like a routine cash pickup, they find themselves ambushed by a team of elite criminals led by Zoe (Keke Palmer). What starts off as a simple robbery quickly turns into a complicated and dangerous operation, compelling the unlikely pair to maneuver through numerous explosive situations.

Eddie Murphy, making his comeback in the action-comedy, appears to be just going through the motions. His performance comes off as worn out, missing the lively charm that made his past performance memorable. The comedic chemistry between Pete Davidson and Eddie Murphy feels mismatched; Davidson's unique style of awkward jokes doesn't work well with Murphy's uninspired performance. This movie is a lost chance to pair two different eras of comedy, and the absence of a smooth comedic flow is one of the major weaknesses of the movie.

The only shining moment in the movie is Keke Palmer's role as the clever and menacing leader, Zoe. She injects a vital surge of energy and charisma into the movie, but even her impressive skills can’t save the wandering storyline. The action scenes are executed well but lack originality, sticking to a familiar pattern of car chases, explosions, and shootouts that you have seen from many other movies.

In conclusion, The Pickup is a watchable movie and will likely be forgotten easily. It is not a movie you crave to watch immediately, but a list you put in the back of your mind and decide to watch when you want to pass some time. The movie may provide some entertainment, but it is easily forgotten when the credits start rolling.
