Ella McCay

Ella McCay Review:

James L. Brooks' new movie, Ella McCay, which came out on December 12th, 2025, after a long wait, is sadly a letdown. Even though the movie has a fantastic group of cast, including Emma Mackey, Jamie Lee Curtis, Woody Harrelson, Albert Brooks, and Ayo Edebiri, the movie suffers from a script that is unfocused and confusing.

Set in 2008, the movie centers on a 34-year-old Ella McCay (Emma Mackey), a smart and ambitious lieutenant governor of a state. Ella suddenly becomes the governor when her boss, Governor Bill (Albert Brooks), leaves to work for the new president. The movie shows three chaotic days where Ella tries to pass an important bill while dealing with a series of crises: Someone discovered she used a government apartment for private meetings with her husband, Ryan (Jack Lowden), and tried to blackmail her. She has to confront her estranged father, Eddie (Woody Harrelson), who cheated on her mother and also tries to spend time with her brother, Casey (Spike Fearn), who is afraid of leaving the house.

The movie has several major flaws as highlighted by critics:

The story is confusing because it tries to do too much. It has too many side stories that are not fully developed. The political issues don't seem real or important, and the many different family problems don't connect to form a good, clear message.

The script has a mixture of comedy and serious topics but fails to balance them. The scenes are not genuinely funny and do not bring out the emotion in viewers. The dialogue sounded strange or old-fashioned, and it is poorly written compared to Brooks' previous, clever writing.

The best thing about the movie is the great performance by the supporting cast that elevates the movie despite the weak script. Jamie Lee Curtis, who plays Ella's aunt Helen, is wonderful to watch. She was praised for her performance as the most believable and focused one in the movie. Woody Harrelson gives a friendly and enjoyable performance playing an estranged father who is unreliable. Kumail Nanjiani plays Trooper Nash, Ella's driver. He is known for saying some of the only jokes in the script that actually worked.

In the end, Ella McCay is considered a disappointment and a confusing mistake; it seems like a movie made up of good, individual scenes that do not connect to form a complete and satisfying story. The movie feels honest, but it lacks the necessary energy, cleverness, and strong emotions of his best films. The movie had great actors and good ideas, but it was made in a way that is confused and messy.
