Freakier Friday Review:

Twenty-two years after their initial body-swapping misadventure, Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan are back to reprise their roles that made them famous in this feel-good sequel, Freakier Friday released this past weekend. The movie aims to bring back the charm of the beloved 2003 original, but now with a fresh twist for different age groups. Although the movie relies heavily on the successful formula of the original, it achieves success due to its delightful cast and a sincere effort to refresh its themes for today's audience.

The story begins with Anna Coleman (Lindsay Lohan), who is now a single mother and music manager, getting ready to tie the knot with a kind-hearted British chef named Eric (Manny Jacinto). However, her teenage daughter, Harper (Julia Butters), has conflicts with Eric's daughter, Lily (Sophia Hammons), putting the harmony of their new blended family at risk. When a fortune-teller unintentionally causes a four-way body swap, the situation becomes even more chaotic. As a result, Anna finds herself in Harper's body, Harper is in Anna's body, Anna's mom Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis) is in Lily’s body, and Lily is in Tess’s. This complicated swap forces each woman to truly experience life from the perspective of the others.

The real highlight of Freakier Friday is the performances, especially from the returning stars. Jamie Lee Curtis is incredibly funny, bringing great energy and a carefree spirit to her role as a young, style-obsessed teen stuck in an adult’s body. Her physical humor and sense of timing shine through, showing once again why she excels in this kind of role. Lindsay Lohan delivers a more subtle, yet still strong performance. Playing a teen dealing with her mother's life, she delivers a perfect mix of youthful confusion and funny clumsiness, reminding viewers of her talent when she was a child star. The younger actresses, Julia Butters and Sophia Hammons, do a great job playing their older selves, although they have less engaging roles during the initial part of the film.

While the concept of the movie builds directly on the original, it is also its main flaw. The storyline closely mirrors the 2003 movie, including a significant musical performance and a rehearsal dinner for a wedding. This close resemblance can sometimes feel lacking in originality, making it seem like the movie is hesitant to create something new. The concept of a four-way body swap, though it sounds intriguing, might also cause some confusion, especially in the beginning. Nevertheless, the movie effectively explores themes like empathy, communication, and the difficulties of blended families, providing an emotional core that makes up for its predictable storyline.

Ultimately, Freakier Friday is a charming, funny, and heartwarming sequel. Although it may not achieve the same level of greatness as the original, it brings back great memories and fresh laughter for a younger audience. With outstanding comedic performances from the main cast, it's a joyful comeback for a beloved family classic for a new generation as well as the old that makes you feel good.
