Supergirl Fun Facts:
A "Party Animal" Supergirl:
In the upcoming take on the character, this version of Kara Zor-El is a total rebel with a bit of a wild side. Here is how her unique lifestyle works in this version of the story. Kryptonians only possess god-like strength and invulnerability when exposed to the radiation of a yellow sun (like Earth's); Kara is effectively invincible and unable to feel the physical effects of things like alcohol. To bypass her own superpowers, Kara reportedly seeks out planets orbiting red suns. Under a red sun, her cellular structure loses its charge, stripping away her invincibility and making her physically human. She visits these worlds specifically so she can get drunk, let loose, and party without her Kryptonian ability getting in the way.
Casting a New Legend:
The casting of Milly Alcock, best known for her breakout performance as the young Rhaenyra Targaryen in House of the Dragon, was a very deliberate choice by DC Studios. James Gunn felt Alcock was the perfect fit for the role because she possesses a unique blend of "edge, grace, and authenticity." This specific combination is vital for this version of Supergirl, whose origin story is significantly darker and more tragic than the one we usually see in comics or television. Unlike her cousin Superman, who was sent to Earth as a baby and raised by loving parents in Kansas, Kara grew up on a drifting fragment of Krypton. She didn't just escape a dying world; she spent years on a floating rock, watching her society slowly crumble and witnessing the deaths of everyone she knew. This history creates a character who is much "tougher" and more cynical than the typical superhero. Gunn wanted an actress who could portray that deep-seated emotional pain while still maintaining the "grace" of a hero.
Aquaman vs. Lobo:
In Supergirl, Jason Momoa is officially hanging up his trident and swapping the depths of the ocean for the far reaches of outer space. After nearly a decade of playing Arthur Curry in the Aquaman franchise, Momoa has been cast as the fan-favorite antihero, Lobo. Unlike the noble and heroic Aquaman, Lobo is an intergalactic bounty hunter and mercenary. He is often portrayed as a foul-mouthed, cigar-chomping biker who travels through the cosmos on a "space hog" (a high-tech, flying motorcycle). While Aquaman is a king burdened by duty, Lobo plays by his own rules. He is practically immortal, possesses incredible strength, and is known for his dark sense of humor and "lone wolf" attitude. In many ways, Lobo aligns more closely with Momoa’s real-life persona, the rugged, motorcycle-loving, heavy-metal enthusiast than the more polished version of Aquaman ever did. This move is part of a larger reboot of the DC film world led by James Gunn and Peter Safran. By moving Momoa from a primary hero like Aquaman to a gritty anti-hero like Lobo, the studio is heading in a bold, new direction. Expect a version of the character that is loud, violent, and incredibly fun, as Momoa finally gets to lean into the "wild man" energy that made him a superstar in the first place.
A Galactic Road Trip:
The upcoming Supergirl film is being described as a "road movie" set in deep space; this story takes a much darker, grittier tone, focusing on the heavy emotional scars left by Supergirl’s past. Ruthye is on a quest to find the person responsible for her father’s death, and Kara chooses to help her navigate the dangerous reaches of the galaxy to find them. The screenplay, written by Ana Nogueira, doesn’t shy away from the psychological toll of Kara's life. While Superman was raised in a cozy home in Kansas, Kara grew up on a fragment of her dying planet, witnessing the end of her civilization firsthand. The film candidly explores the trauma of her childhood. It portrays her not as a perfect hero, but as a survivor who is still processing immense grief and loss. The "road trip" across the stars serves as a metaphor for her own personal growth. Throughout their travels, Kara must decide what kind of hero she wants to be or if she even wants to be a hero at all. By taking place entirely in outer space, the film removes the safety net of Earth, placing Kara in alien environments where her powers and her morality are constantly put to the test. Ultimately, this is a story about two survivors from different worlds finding a way to move forward through their shared pain, set against the vast and unforgiving backdrop of the universe.
A Familiar Cousin:
After making his big debut in the 2025 Superman film, David Corenswet will appear as Kal-El to support his cousin, Kara Zor-El. While they are both survivors of the planet Krypton, Superman and Supergirl have very different life experiences. Seeing them together on screen allows the filmmakers to explore their unique dynamic. As the more established hero on Earth, Clark Kent (Kal-El) can provide a moral compass for his rebellious cousin, Kara, who is still finding her way. Their interaction highlights the fact that they are the last remaining members of the House of El, carrying the weight of an entire lost civilization on their shoulders. By having Corenswet appear in both films, DC Studios is "cementing" the connection between these characters. It proves that these stories aren't happening in isolation and establishes a shared universe where the actions in one movie have real consequences in another. It helps the audience understand in this new cinematic world, whether the story takes place in Metropolis or across the galaxy, these heroes are part of the same timeline.
