Troll 2

Troll 2 Review:

The highly anticipated Norwegian monster sequel, Troll 2, started streaming on Netflix (December 1st). It definitely has more action and spectacle than the first movie from 2022. Even though it's bigger, it doesn't have the same great, simple charm of the original story. Director Roar Uthaug aimed for a bigger budget movie with lots of complex monster lore, which is exciting to watch, but it sometimes fails as a typical sequel because it tries to do too much.

The movie takes place a few years after the event in Oslo, featuring the familiar professor, Nora Tidemann (Ine Marie Wilmann), who is now an outcast because of her controversial history with the trolls. She is drawn back into the scene when a massive, ancient troll is brought back to life from a frozen government research facility. This new troll seeks revenge against Norway's Christian legacy, targeting King Olaf, who once defeated and oppressed the trolls centuries ago.

The situation quickly changes with the arrival of another troll, a more gentle creature that Nora tries to communicate with and keep hidden. This leads to a dramatic face-off between two giant trolls that carries more personal and emotional weight for Nora. The screenplay takes viewers on a new adventure hunting for clues and motivations behind King Olaf's actions, exploring old churches and tombs to piece together lost history.

Where the movie really stands out is in its giant monster sequence and visuals. The new trolls are both amazing and captivating, and Uthaug takes advantage of Norway's beautiful landscapes—from frozen fjords to the Nidaros Cathedral—in a brilliant way. The action sequence between the two giant trolls is breathtaking, with collateral damage to the surrounding environment that is equally convincing. The effects used for the creatures are refined, adding a true feeling of heaviness and danger to the giant monsters on the loose.

Unfortunately, by trying to go "bigger," Troll 2 becomes a little too complicated. The new, expanded backstory starts off interesting, but it quickly gets confusing and hard to follow. The movie tries to take on too many plots; it shifts back and forth between a fun monster adventure for families and finding an answer to a deep historical and mythical puzzle, never deciding on one specific tone.

Troll 2 is an exciting and spectacular monster movie that delivers action sequences on a massive scale. Those who enjoyed the first movie will definitely enjoy the sequel as well. Viewers who do not care about the storyline but are only interested in the action will most likely find the movie entertaining. It is visually impressive, the effects are well-crafted, and the action sequences are very well executed.
