Bowser Jr. uses a magic paintbrush to free his father and start stealing the universe's Power Stars. To stop them, Mario and his friends leave home and head into deep space. Teaming up with the mysterious Rosalina and her fleet of Lumas, the brothers embark on a gravity-defying adventure to stop Bowser from taking over the galaxy. This high-stakes mission brings Yoshi onto the team and takes the Mario brothers on their biggest adventure yet.

In November 2025, Nintendo finally confirmed that Brie Larson will be the voice of Rosalina. This is a special moment for Larson because she previously expressed being a fan of Super Mario Galaxy games for a long time. Now, she actually gets to play the cosmic character she once played as a fan.
Yoshi is Finally Here:
The first movie ended with a short scene hinting that Yoshi would return. Now, it is official: Yoshi is a main character in the new film. The Yoshi First Look video premiered on January 25, 2026, and features Yoshi is running across the clouds on strange new planets along with the Mario and Luigi brothers.
Bowser Jr. Joins the Fight:
Bowser Jr. is voiced by Benny Safdie (director of Uncut Gems and The Smashing Machine). Bowser Jr. attempts a daring rescue of his shrunken, imprisoned father and tries to restore him to his full terrifying size by stealing the universe's Power Stars. The Mario brothers and the team must stop Bowser from taking over the galaxy.
A "Galaxy" Soundtrack:
Composer Brian Tyler is returning to compose the music for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The music is performed by an orchestra of 70 musicians, and he will also be updating the music from the original Super Mario Galaxy Wii games to make it sound even bigger and better for the big screen.
Animation is Completed:
By January 2026, Illumination CEO and producer Chris Meledandri confirmed that the animation was completely finished. The team is currently working on the final touches of adding sound effects, music, and the last touch-up before the movie comes out.
A Cosmic Date Change:
The movie was initially set to be released on April 3, 2026, but the date was moved up to April 1, 2026. Nintendo and Illumination moved the release date up two days earlier to align with the global premiere on Wednesday.
