Andy Serkis has spent almost 15 years trying to bring George Orwell's Animal Farm to the big screen. The production faced many challenges, moving through various studios and shifting from a performance-capture concept to a fully animated feature. Despite these delays, Serkis’s persistence finally paid off; the movie is now complete and scheduled for a 2026 theatrical release.

Original vs. Andy's Version:
While the main story of animals seizing control of their farm remains the same, the main difference lies in what the two versions are criticizing. George Orwell’s original 1945 book was a dark, serious attack specifically aimed at the Soviet Union and Joseph Stalin, but Andy Serkis’s 2026 movie updates the message to target modern issues like corporate greed, dishonest politicians, and "cronyism."

After fifteen years of setbacks, challenges, and delays, Andy Serkis has finally released his version of Animal Farm in theaters. What started as a long-term passion project has transformed into a unique and somewhat strange cinematic experience. This new adaptation is a fully animated feature film that attempts to balance two very different worlds. George Orwell’s original 1945 novella is a dark, serious warning about how power can corrupt even the best intentions. It was written as a grim political satire to mirror the rise of Joseph Stalin and the Soviet Union. This new version tries to package that heavy message as a family-friendly spectacle. It uses bright visuals and high-energy action sequences typical of modern blockbuster movies to appeal to a wider, younger audience.

The foundation of the plot stays true to the original book. The story follows a group of mistreated farm animals who finally have enough, rebel against their human owners, and take over the land for themselves. They rename the property Animal Farm and vow to run it better than any human ever could. Under the leadership of a pig named Snowball, the animals set up their own independent government. To make sure they never repeat the mistakes of the people they overthrew, they create a strict set of laws designed to keep everyone equal and prevent any animal from acting like a human.

In his comedies, that laugh is warm and inviting; here, he laughs to hide his true intentions, making him feel much more dangerous and unpredictable. Rogen uses his natural charm to show how a dictator can mask their hunger for power behind a friendly face, making the character’s eventual betrayal feel even more personal for the audience.

Adding a powerful layer of sophistication to Animal Farm, Laverne Cox takes on the role of Snowball. In this version, Snowball is portrayed as a sow (a female pig) and serves as the primary co-leader of the animal rebellion. While Napoleon represents the push for raw power and control, Snowball represents the dream of a better life for everyone. Culkin brings a fast-paced, nervous, and highly persuasive energy to the character. He doesn't use physical strength to get his way; he uses words. Coming off his success playing fast-talking, morally gray characters in Succession, Culkin is a perfect fit for a pig who has to be both charming and slimy at the same time. He gives Squealer a very convincing vibe, someone who is clearly lying to you but does it with so much wit and speed that you find yourself nodding along anyway.

In a creative reimagining of George Orwell’s classic, Gaten Matarazzo takes on the role of Lucky, a young piglet caught in the middle of a philosophical tug-of-war. Lucky finds himself torn between the harsh, manipulative rules of Napoleon and the idealistic, visionary dreams of Snowball. By introducing Lucky in Animal Farm, the story gains a coming-of-age character who sees the world through innocent eyes. The audience experiences the confusion and moral dilemmas of the rebellion through his youthful perspective. Watching a young character struggle to choose between right and wrong adds a layer of empathy that isn't as prominent in the original story.

Animal Farm is earning high marks for its stunning animation and the standout performances from its talented cast, but the final product struggles to find a consistent tone. The movie tries to balance two very different worlds. There are plenty of jokes and moments designed to make you laugh; it is a lighthearted comedy. On the other hand, it attempts to deliver a serious message about the dangers of dictatorship and political corruption. Because it tries to be two things at once, the message ends up getting a little blurry. It’s a visual masterpiece; however, the story couldn't quite decide what it wanted to be.
