The Housemaid Review:
While Avatar: Fire and Ash took over the IMAX theaters this weekend, Paul Feig’s version of Freida McFadden’s popular BookTok hit, The Housemaid, offered a different kind of entertainment: a stylish, quirky, and boldly cruel psychological thriller. The movie excels visually and provides entertaining, over-the-top storytelling, even though some critics didn't like how the plot was put together.
The movie tells the story of Millie (Sydney Sweeney), a young woman with a criminal record and living out of her car. Desperate for a fresh start, she lands a "too good to be true" job as a live-in maid for the ultra-wealthy Winchester family in Long Island.
Millie soon realizes the dynamic of her situations is truly unsettling. Nina Winchester (Amanda Seyfried) is a volatile housewife who alternates between being Millie's best friend and her worst nightmare. Andrew Winchester (Brandon Sklenar) is Nina's husband, who appears to be a victim of his wife’s instability and the only person keeping the household together as a perfect couple.
As Millie gets caught up in the Winchesters' intense family drama, she realizes that the door to her attic room can be locked from the outside is a clear indication that this is not normal. Director Feig uses this idea cleverly as a twisted element of storytelling.
Amanda Seyfried gives the best performance in the movie. She plays Nina with a wild, high-strung energy that is both frightening and funny at the same time. Every small facial movement and loud outburst is perfectly timed to be as dramatic as possible.
Sydney Sweeney's performance is solid as she transitions her character Millie from a victim to taking back control. In the beginning of the movie, her character is desperate and helpless, but then towards the end of the movie, her character transitions into someone with courage and the desire to take back control, just like her character in the movie Christy.
Director Feig, who is well-known for his comedy movies like Bridesmaids, adds a distinctive "shiny humor" to the story. The Winchester house is extremely clean and bright, which makes it more exciting and enjoyable when things eventually get messy with blood splattering all over and dishes start breaking. Feig doesn't take the story too seriously; he allowed the dramatic story to unfold on its own accord while still keeping the audience on the edge of their seats.
The Housemaid is a fun, over-the-top movie that is perfect for the holidays. It isn't trying to be a serious horror film; instead, it is just a stylish, slightly silly, and very mean thriller. The Housemaid is a well-made story about revenge that gives the audience exactly what they want to see. The movie feels a bit slow towards the middle, but it is full of exciting action and violence as it approaches the end. If you’re looking for a break from the big sci-fi blue aliens movie and just want to watch rich people with volatile behavior, you will love this.
