Send Help Review:
Director Sam Raimi is back in Send Help; he finally returns to the horror-comedies that made him famous in his early career. He has brought plenty of gore, dark comedy, and a wild performance by Rachel McAdams. The result is a sharp, cruel, and highly fun thriller about surviving against the odds. The movie is a mix of bloody horror and silly comedy, but with a lot more violence.
The story centers on Linda Liddle (Rachel McAdams), a shy but very talented researcher who does all the hard work but never gets noticed. Things get worse when she is denied a promotion by the company’s new boss, Bradley Preston (Dylan O’Brien). Bradley is an annoying "frat-boy" type who became the newly appointed CEO through powerful family connections. Despite their problems, Linda has to go on a business trip to Thailand with him.
When their private plane crashes during a storm, Linda and a badly injured Bradley are the only survivors. Stranded on a deserted island, the power dynamic shift in a major way. It turns out that Linda is a superfan of the show Survivor and has spent years training in bushcraft skills. Meanwhile, Bradley’s only "skill" is being rude to women. On this island, there is no corporate office to protect him, and Linda is finally the one in charge.
Rachel McAdams delivers an amazing performance in this movie. She moves away from her usual "nice girl" roles to play someone we first feel sorry for but eventually becomes powerful and terrifying. She transformed from a simple office worker into a dangerous survivalist, which feels natural and is very fun to watch as the story goes on.
Dylan O’Brien clearly had a lot of fun playing a villain who is a total jerk. He is successful in making his character, seem spoiled and manipulative, as someone deserving who is used to getting his way. At the same time, he also captures how weak and pathetic his character is without his money and power. His character is simply funny because he shifts completely from a total jerk to a helpless CEO on the island.
In Send Help Raimi's signature style of filming is everywhere. You should expect fast camera zooms, POV shots, and "flying" liquid shots (like blood, vomit, and rotten fruit juice). It is gross and over-the-top silly in a fun way, and it includes a surprise "jump-scare," so brace yourself and don't let it catch you off guard.
The movie has some flaws. About halfway through, the story slows down and becomes less exciting. The story tries to include a romance but is a setup for something much darker and more twisted. The middle part of the film wanders around a bit before finally getting to the crazy, violent ending.
Send Help is made specifically for people who love weird and gross horror. It is a dark, funny, and bloody story about getting revenge, and it proves that Sam Raimi is still great at making intense, bloody horror movies mixed with dark comedy. The great performance between McAdams and O’Brien makes it a "must-watch" for fans of horror and comedy.
