Song Sung Blue Review:

Released on Christmas Day 2025, Song Sung Blue is a different kind of music movie that focuses on the heartwarming and soulful story set in a small Milwaukee bar. Directed by Craig Brewer, the film is based on the true story of Mike and Claire Sardina. In the 1990s, the couple became local stars and found love by performing as a Neil Diamond tribute band called "Lightning & Thunder." Even though they weren't world-famous, their journey was full of drama and emotion.

Hugh Jackman gives a very realistic performance as Mike, a Vietnam veteran and mechanic who is recovering from alcoholism. He plays the role with an honest, exciting energy that is both funny and touching. He perfectly shows the spirit of a man who uses entertainment and singing Neil Diamond's songs to stay sober and help him get through life.

The best part of the movie is Kate Hudson. She plays Claire, a single mother and Patsy Cline impersonator. This is Hudson’s best acting in a long time. She shows two sides of the character: her cheerful, friendly personality and her internal struggle following a devastating accident that changed her life forever. Her realistic acting keeps the movie feeling honest and prevents it from becoming too overly sentimental.

The movie is split into two very different halves. The first half is a fun, colorful trip through the 1990s in Milwaukee. It is full of sparkly costumes and performances in small local bars.

However, the second half takes a serious turn and focuses on more difficult topics involving Claire's tragic accident that causes Claire to lose her leg. The tone shifts from a lighthearted musical into a serious drama about living with a disability and working towards getting better.

The movie also focuses on Mike's health as he deals with heart problems and a long-term struggle to stay sober. These struggles show his physical weariness, which makes the singing scenes feel more realistic and less like a fantasy.

Song Sung Blue is a rich and satisfying holiday movie that isn't afraid to touch on the difficult topics of life. Some viewers might find the story unsettling when the movie shifts from the first half of happy moments to the second half of difficult moments. The great connection between Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson makes the movie well worth watching. You don't have to be a Neil Diamond fan to enjoy this film; it is for everyone and a perfect example of a movie and a great reminder that you can still dream at middle age.
