I Was a Stranger is a powerful and honest movie about the Syrian refugee crisis. It is both a thrilling drama and a deeply moving story about people's lives caught up in the war. Directed by Brandt Andersen, the movie is based on his 2020 short film Refugee. The movie tells the story in a bold, nonlinear structure that often moves back-and-forth in time, featuring different character points of view. This helps people living in safe countries understand what life is really like for those forced to leave their homes because of war.

The movie begins in Chicago in 2023 with Dr. Amira Homsi, a pediatric surgeon, reflecting on the horrific time from her past, which sets the story in motion. The movie then jumps back to the year 2016 in the city of Aleppo. It tells the story of five different strangers whose lives are interconnected with each other.

The Doctor (Yasmine Al Massri): Amira, a woman forced to flee her home with her young daughter after a tragic bombing that turned her life upside down.

The Soldier (Yahya Mahayni): Mustafa, an Assad loyalist struggling with his conscience as he is ordered to carry out brutal executions.

The Smuggler (Omar Sy): Marwan, a complex character who profits from the desperate in Turkey to fund his own son's medical care.

Andersen intentionally chose not to focus on the complex 14-year history of Syrian politics. Instead, he focuses on the real-life suffering of people displaced by the civil war. The shaky, handheld camera work makes the movie feel tense and urgent. One of the best features of the movie is a very dramatic sequence involving a boat crossing the water at night. It was filmed in one long take, making it one of the most nerve-wracking scenes in film history.

The movie attempts to explain the refugee crisis by following five different characters. However, because each story lasts only about 25 minutes, the film can feel a bit disconnected. Just as you become invested in one person, the story switches to someone new. This frequent switching can make the ending feel less powerful because you didn't spend enough time with any one particular character.

I Was a Stranger is a "wake-up call" that depicts the hard reality of life for those displaced by war. The movie is difficult to watch because it is extremely emotional and unsettling at times but a very important viewing. Despite the story being told in a non-linear structure, the movie is extremely powerful as a whole film. The movie is not about the story you see on the news, but about an understanding for us to stop seeing refugees as "strangers" and start seeing them as our neighbors.
