Keeper Review:
Osgood Perkins is a well-known horror director who likes to use creepy feelings and a cold, unsettling look rather than shocking violence to scare the audience. His new movie, Keeper (old-fashioned nature horror), goes back to the isolated, slow-paced style of his earlier work. However, the movie ends up feeling stuck between two ideas: it has an interesting main character, but the story tries too hard to explain its own supernatural background.
The movie is about a smart city artist named Liz (Tatiana Maslany) and her doctor boyfriend, Malcolm (Rossif Sutherland), who travel to Malcolm’s family cabin in a remote area to celebrate their first anniversary. The beautiful cabin has many windows, making it feel more like a glass cage than a cozy retreat. They are already in a tense relationship as Liz worries about her past anxieties. This troubled relationship becomes the main source of stress at the cabin. Things get even worse when a strange cake suddenly shows up and Malcolm's cousin, Darren (Birkett Turton), arrives all of a sudden, acting very rude and aggressive.
In the beginning, Keeper is really good at making you feel confused and isolated. Director Perkins and cameraman Jeremy Cox create a feeling that you are constantly being watched. The camera often focuses on empty spaces, suggesting that there are shadows or things you can't see. This makes you wonder if the fear comes from the supernatural or from Liz's paranoia about her boyfriend. The movie cleverly shows the real-life anxiety of modern dating and the fear that a nice-seeming partner is actually hiding something toxic or a deeply troubled secret from their past.
Tatiana Maslany's performance is the best part of the whole movie. As Liz transitions from being cautiously hopeful to becoming wildly confused, Maslany delivers a brilliant performance, showing her slow, controlled breakdown. She holds most of the movie's drama, making her struggle to figure out if she's being manipulated or facing a real supernatural danger that feels very intense and unsettling.
Unfortunately, the second half of the movie runs into a problem that often shows up in Perkins' films: it tries to explain too much. After successfully creating a very uncomfortable, dreamlike, and confusing atmosphere, the movie eventually stops and gives the audience a huge amount of background details. The movie explains the cabin's dark past, including ancient parasitic creatures, ritual killings, and Malcolm's family's dark history. This shift ruins much of the beautiful mystery the movie works so hard on building up initially.
Some viewers may be frustrated by Keeper because of its slow pacing and over explanation towards the end. However, if you enjoy Perkins' unusual style of filmmaking in setting up the atmosphere, sound effects, and Maslany's impressive performance, you will find the movie fascinating, but not perfect. It's a dark fairy tale about the fear of confronting the dark secret a loved one is hiding. Overall, the movie is beautifully filmed, creepy, and unsettling to watch, even though the ending isn't as strong as the rest of the film.
