Echo Valley

Echo Valley Review:

Released on Apple TV+ on June 13th, 2025, Michael Pearce's Echo Valley is an exciting drama that explores the complicated bond between a mother and her struggling daughter, portrayed by Julianne Moore and Sydney Sweeney. Written by Brad Ingelsby, known for Mare of Easttown, the movie offers a thrilling story about love, sacrifice, and survival, but sometimes shifts between engaging drama and a slow rhythm, which makes the film inconsistent.

Kate (Julianne Moore), a widow mourning the loss of her spouse while trying to run her horse farm in Pennsylvania, faces a horrifying ordeal when her daughter Claire (Sydney Sweeney), who is battling addiction, shows up at her door in a panic and covered in blood. This sets off a journey for the mother, who strives to protect her daughter, dragging them both into a tangled mess of lies and increasing danger.

Julianne Moore once again provides an impressive and subtle performance in the role of Kate. She perfectly captures the character's deep sorrow, constant love for her child, and the extreme actions she takes to protect her daughter.

Sydney Sweeney's portrayal of Claire is intense and powerful, showing both the loving and volatile sides of someone struggling with addiction. However, she didn't have enough time on screen, especially during the second part of the story. She did appear initially in the beginning of the story in engaging drama showcasing her loving side and bonding with her mother, at times showcasing her volatile and violent side, and then she left. The thriller starts after she returned covered in blood, and then her screen time was limited while Kate was managing the ordeal.

Domhnall Gleeson stands out in a threatening role as Jackie, a drug dealer who makes Kate’s difficult situation even worse, adding a much-needed burst of suspense. His drug dealer and greedy character were so compelling that it makes you really hate the guy when you imagine yourself in Kate's situation.

The beginning of the story, which highlights Kate's sorrow and Claire's fight against addiction, provides a solid emotional base. Although it is a thriller, the pacing of the film is slow at times, and because there are twists and turns, you have to be patient to let the story unfold, but you don't know that until you watch all the way through for surprises and discoveries.

Echo Valley has a variety of elements, showcasing excellent performance by Julianne Moore. It dives into the unconditional love of a mother for her daughter and the harmful effects of addiction with a powerful and honest approach. However, the combination of engaging drama and sometimes slow-paced thriller makes the film inconsistent and the viewer impatient. Despite its flaws, I watched it all the way through, and without giving anything away, I was very satisfied with the ending, to say the least.
