Obsession Fun Facts:

From $800 to $15 Million:
Director Curry Barker’s rise in Hollywood is a true "underdog" story. It all started with Milk & Serial, a horror movie he made for just $800. He uploaded it to YouTube, where its "found footage" style, making the movie look like real home videos, blew up and pulled in millions of viewers. Barker became the talk of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) because of that viral success. His latest project, Obsession, triggered a massive "bidding war" in the end; Focus Features won the rights to distribute the movie, paying a staggering $15 million.

The Blumhouse Boost:
Even though Focus Features originally bought the movie, the team at Blumhouse, the powerhouse studio behind hits like the M3GAN franchise and the Black Phone franchise, was so impressed by the excitement surrounding the film that they decided to join the team as producers.

Inspired by The Simpsons:
Believe it or not, this new horror movie wasn't inspired by a spooky book or a campfire tale; it actually came from a cartoon. Director Curry Barker got the idea for the script while re-watching a classic episode of The Simpsons. He was specifically inspired by the "Treehouse of Horror" segment where the Simpsons family uses a monkey’s paw to make several wishes that go hilariously wrong.

The "One Wish Willow":
While Obsession is inspired by that classic Simpsons episode, the filmmakers didn't just copy the old-school severed monkey's paw. Instead, they created an entirely new supernatural object to drive the story, and by doing so, the filmmakers make the horror feel grounded in the present day. By making the object look "cool" and "playful," the movie plays on the modern trend of manifesting and "asking the universe" for favors. You get exactly what you ask for, but the "universe" delivers it in the most horrific, ironic way possible.

A YouTube Comedy Connection:
Even though the movie is a horror genre, its creators actually come from the world of comedy. Director Curry Barker and his co-star Cooper Tomlinson (who plays Ian) are the creative team behind the hit YouTube channel "That’s a Bad Idea." They’ve spent years perfecting short, funny sketches, and they brought those same skills to this horror project. They are using those same storytelling tricks to keep viewers on the edge, and it works because horror and comedy are very similar in the sense that a good scare or joke depends entirely on perfect timing. They also know how to keep the audience guessing because they are used to weird and unpredictable types of writing.

Obsession Review:

There is a massive wave of excitement building around Obsession, the new horror movie directed by Curry Barker. After causing an absolute frenzy at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), the movie has officially been snapped up by Focus Features. At its core, the movie is a modern twist on very classic storytelling. A famous supernatural concept where a person is granted a wish, but that wish comes with an enormous, horrific price. It is the ultimate be careful what you wish for scenario. It explores what happens when the desperate desire for power, validation, and control meets a supernatural curse. The result is a deeply unsettling, thought-provoking horror film.

Obsession centers on a young man named Baron, though everyone calls him Bear (Michael Johnston). Bear is a socially anxious, chronically awkward, and painfully shy employee who works at a family-owned music store. For years, Bear has been hopelessly in love with his coworker and childhood friend, Nikki (Inde Navarrette). Nikki eventually throws him a romantic lifeline, giving him a perfect, open opportunity to just admit how he feels about her. But Bear is too paralyzed by his own insecurities to take it.

Desperate and frustrated by his inability to speak his mind, Bear buys a cheap novelty toy called the "One Wish Willow" from a New Age gift shop. In a moment of pure desperation, Bear breaks the stick and makes a wish; he wishes for Nikki to love him unconditionally and more than anyone else in the entire world. Bear gets exactly what he asked for but not in the romantic, fairytale way he imagined. What started as a desperate crush quickly spirals into a completely terrifying reality. Nikki’s affection instantly turns into a blinding, obsessive, and inescapable nightmare.

The mastermind behind Obsession is writer and director Curry Barker. Barker actually got his start making sketch comedy videos on YouTube. Because of his internet background, he brings a completely unique, unpredictable energy to the big screen. He knows exactly how to pace a scene to make the audience feel delightfully uncomfortable. Barker is a master at building intense, agonizing social tension. The movie operates with a sharp, wicked, and dark sense of humor.

As the curse takes hold, Nikki begins depicting bizarre behavior to prove that she completely owns and dominates Bear’s life. Just when the movie has you chuckling at the absurdity of it all, Barker pulls the rug out from under you. Right after a funny, awkward moment, the film suddenly pivots into shocking, bloody violence. It is a wild cinematic rollercoaster that reminds you that, at its heart, this is a horror story.

At first, when the wish kicks in, Nikki's sudden affection feels like a miracle to Bear. But he completely underestimated the terrifying power of his own words. The exact phrase he used, wishing for her to love him more than anyone else, rapidly mutates into something monstrous. The smart, funny, and sharp-witted Nikki that Bear grew up with completely vanishes. In her place stands a highly volatile, unpredictable, and manic version of herself. Her entire personality is replaced by an overwhelming obsession. To Nikki, loving Bear more than anyone else means that no one else is allowed to exist in his world. What Bear thought would be a beautiful romance instantly transforms into an inescapable, violent nightmare, proving that sometimes, getting exactly what you want is the worst thing that can possibly happen.

Inde Navarrette is the absolute heart and soul of the movie. She delivers a powerhouse performance in Obsession that is deeply intense and disturbing, with a terrifying transformation. What makes Navarrette’s performance so unforgettable is her unbelievable control over her expressions and her voice. She can change her entire personality in the blink of an eye with terrifying precision. One second, she is playing the ultimate dream girl who is sweet, bubbly, overly affectionate, and completely devoted to Bear. But all of a sudden, that sweet persona completely vanishes. Instantly, she transforms into a wide-eyed, screaming nightmare that looks and feels like a person taken over by a demonic entity.

Navarrette juggles these two extreme personalities seamlessly and effortlessly in Obsession. She uses her facial expressions and the pitch of her voice to keep both Bear and the audience completely off-balance. You never know whether she is about to give Bear a loving hug or violently attack him. Watching her switch from pure love to pure madness in a split second is one of the most thrilling and unsettling things you will see onscreen this year.

While Navarrette steals the show, Michael Johnston also deserves credit for his incredible performance in Obsession. Johnston does not play Bear as a traditional horror movie hero, someone you are meant to cheer for as they try to escape. Instead, he plays Bear as a weak, pathetic, and deeply flawed individual. He acts as a mirror for the audience, showing a very dark side of human nature.

For his entire life, Bear felt invisible and unloved. Now, he is finally getting the absolute, undivided attention and affection he always craved. He is so addicted to feeling wanted that he is willing to overlook the horror of the situation until it is too late. Even though he is getting exactly what he wants, his wish completely destroyed Nikki’s free will. It is a brilliant, unsettling look at selfishness, showing that Bear might just be the real monster of the story.

Obsession succeeds beautifully as a dark modern-day fairy tale that is meant to teach us a lesson. It delivers an unforgettable wake-up call about why you can never force someone to love you. The horrific, destructive consequences of stripping away someone else's free will just to satisfy your own desires. The movie delivers this message loud and clear to the audience. This is not a standard horror movie with monsters and jump scares; instead, it builds a heavy atmosphere of dread, and it creates a suffocating feeling of anxiety that grows heavier and heavier with every passing minute.
