Behemoth Fun Facts: Pedro Pascal Stepped In To Take Over, Bringing His Own Signature Warmth, Intensity, And Star Power To The Lead Role
A Nine Composer Mega-Score:
In the movie Behemoth, Pedro Pascal plays a character who records music for several fictional film projects. To give each of these imaginary movies its own authentic feel, director Tony Gilroy brought in a powerhouse team of nine different Hollywood composers. Instead of having a single composer handle the entire soundtrack for each fictional film, Gilroy assigned a different composer to each movie within a movie sequence. This approach gave every fictional film snippet its own distinct personality, musical style, and thematic tone, making the fictional movie industry inside the film feel surprisingly real.
Leading Man Recast:
When the movie Behemoth was first announced, Oscar Isaac was cast as the lead character, a cellist named Alex Serian. However, after Isaac dropped out of the project, Pedro Pascal stepped in to take over, bringing his own signature warmth, intensity, and star power to the lead role.
Last-Minute Recasting Drama:
David Harbour was originally set to co-star alongside Pedro Pascal in the film Behemoth. However, Harbour had to step down from the project to take a much-needed break after experiencing burnout and exhaustion from filming the final season of Stranger Things. Following his departure, comedic actor Will Arnett was brought in to take over the role.
A Change of Pace for Tony Gilroy:
As the creative force behind blockbuster action movies like the Bourne film series and the critically acclaimed Star Wars spy thriller Andor, director Tony Gilroy built his reputation on fast-paced suspense, political espionage, and high-stakes tension. Stepping away from espionage and action set pieces, Gilroy shifted focus toward a grounded, deeply human story centered on Hollywood’s studio session musicians, the unsung classical artists who bring movie soundtracks to life in recording studios.
Reuniting the Andor & Michael Clayton Crew:
The project Behemoth brings together a familiar team of collaborators led by director Tony Gilroy. Producer Sanne Wohlenberg and producer/editor John Gilroy, who is Tony’s younger brother, have officially joined the production. This project marks a continuation of their successful creative partnership, having previously worked together on critically acclaimed projects like the Star Wars series Andor and the Oscar-nominated thriller Michael Clayton.
Festivals Loved the Music:
Following its world premiere at the 64th New York Film Festival (NYFF) in early October, the film Behemoth quickly drew praise from critics. Early reviews particularly highlighted two key elements: Pedro Pascal’s magnetic lead performance and the movie's extraordinary, multi-composer musical score. Critics praised Pascal for commanding the screen with undeniable charm and intensity, while the unique collaboration among several composers added a rich, multi-layered emotional backdrop that made the film's soundtrack truly stand out.
